Last month, Alexandre Chatelard’s second EP « l’Homme et la Femme », which included the signature tune « Reconstitution », was released and hailed by critics (such as Les Inrocks and Magic). Today, six artists share their reflections on this title with us.
Data: No need to introduce Data aka David Guillon, a mainstay artist of Ekler’o’shock records, whose first album Skywriter was released in 2009 by Ekler’o’shock/Naïve. He is amongst the most popular remixers of the moment and has recently signed revisited versions of La Roux’s « I’m not your toy », DSL’s « Stupid Bitches » and « Kim and Jessie » by M83. Here, he offers an extended version influenced by both original disco edits and modern electronic music.
Julien Plaisir De aka Plaisir de France has established himself as a favorite of the French musical scene. His club project entitled Sweetlight, through which he remixed Etienne Daho or Vive la Fête, is part of his many musical facets. He delivers an epic version of Alexandre’s title, flirting with « La Serenissima » by Rondo Veneziano.
Gohan : As a young Parisian producer living in exile in London, Gohan is eager to tackle composition by moving away from the usual standards of electronic music. He has worked on many remixes for artists such as Mondkopf, Consume, Jamie Lidell, Monomaniax, Logo (Kitsuné) or the electro pop band We Have Band.
Darabi : In Spring 2009, Philippe and Dang Khoa create the duo Darabi to fulfill their passion for gangster basslines and disco music’s irreverence. Their infectious groove has charmed many dj’s of the current scene including Brodinski or Matt Walsh, and places Darabi at the heart of the young French underground world. It is therefore not surprising that the record label Get The Curse has signed them.
Sacha Di Manolo has joined the Ekler’o’shock team in 2008 (with his first single « Ride on » saluted by Les Inrocks) where his wacky and gaudy pop music readily found its place. He offers an original and playful version of « Reconstitution ». Even Beck couldn’t have done better!
Hours Of Worship: Noticed earlier this year following the release of their first EP « Into the grass », Fred and Cameron aka Hours of Worship, the brains of the project, are the new ambassadors of a dark and damp electro. The American duo blows a cold, narcotic and obscure breeze over the original version, counterbalancing Alexandre Chatelard’s baroque romanticism.

Alexandre Chatelard is a French artist living in Paris. While studying fine arts, he began recording his first demos in the school’s recording studio, usually at nighttime. As music took more importance in his life, he dropped out of school and found refuge in a basement where lived and created music, and nothing else… For a long time, his style developed in Serge Gainsbourg, Jacno or Air’s shadows, from which he draws elegance and a sense of melody. Michel Sardou or the Club Dorothée could also be mentioned. Indeed, Alexandre Chatelard is enthused by all: “crap music inspires us as much, if not more, than our true models do.” Alexandre Chatelard pursues Truth. According to him, actual music is restrained by fear of emotion and exposure: “everything is controlled and nothing moves us, our senses are dull and we merely react to extreme stimuli.”
Alexandre Chatelard does not use computers or vocal plug-ins: “the fact that everybody uses them is proof that it’s the wrong way of proceeding!”
He dreams of a musical Nouvelle Vague, bold enough to bury the elderly without having to resort to the noisy ease of youngsters’ music.
Generally, questions regarding his “musical style” bother him, an artist being essentially, according to him, a shifting matter, inherently unstable: “ I remain wary of coherent musicians who insist on evolving within a single style, because they are usually con artists or intellectually limited people.”

09/17 2007 is Danger’s third EP, the character imagined by Franck Rivoire and a key figure of the record label Ekler’o’shock (over 3 millions plays on Myspace). Following 09/16 2007 he transports us to a different jungle, an urban one this time. New EP, new setting, just as you go up a level in video games, which have always inspired Danger. Not forgetting Spike Lee’s old movies: 09/17 2007 would be the ideal soundtrack for a 2010 remake of Do The Right Thing. 09/17 2007 is more street than club, and is, to this day, his most accessible EP. In his latest tracks, which remain very narrative, he uses introductions, sound effects and onomatopoeias : "what truly matters to me is to create a strong background for all of them. » The EP track by track by Danger : 3h11 : I composed this track thinking of the character Radio Barjo of Do The Right Thing. I boosted all the high notes to produce « a Walkman effect, » reminiscent of an 80s – early 90s street mood. I also found inspiration in Technotronic, breakdance instrumentals (I used keyboards from that period) and even Yuzo Koshiro, the composer of soundtracks for the game Streets of Rage. 3h16 : I have always wanted to create a theme for all the bad guys in cartoons and boss’ in video games. So I used jumpstyle elements to produce a kind of a silly and unwavering military march.
4h30 : For this track, I imagine myself walking down a dark alley, alone, while a group of cyberpunks dressed in a Madmax style stare at me, I see Harrison Ford investigating (Blade Runner), and Maurice Dantec.

Hours of Worship started nearly 3 years ago out of two dudes with a desire to make pissed off electronic music with more in mind than simply making people dance. Based in San Francisco, both Cameron and myself (Fred Miketa) ended up DJing a metal night together through a mutual friend years ago. After the bartender got way pissed at us for playing a healthy dose of obscure black metal and hardcore, we both ended up playing a ton of minimal techno and other weird dance music. Surprised that we vibed on both extreme wavelengths, we bagan jamming in my studio in San Francisco's Tenderloin district.
While it seems that many established producers have roots in hardcore and metal these days, it's always been more than slapping on a Sepultura shirt like Diplo or starting some cheesy electro-core band like Aoki and his cohorts. We aspire to create electronic music that a fan of the darkest, heaviest music can understand and vibe on, far from any trendy bullshit or pretense.

After the rock alike "One In A Million", Data is back with a new single. Mental disco loops, aerial synthesizers, funky ryhtms… The producer now lay down the genesis of this new dance floors anthem : Rick james, Michael Jackson, Metro Area, Alan Braxe & Fred Falke, Moroder. Nor the format neither the orientation of my titles will change in the close future, but today I am mainly focusing on groove, whether it would be a club single or something more melodic. What would you say about your latest remixes, for DSL (Ed Banger) and La Roux (Polydor)? Above all I tried to stick to the acapella and to tack on groove rhythm renewing the style of the original title.
What are your references that have influenced your single?
What would be your musical evolution, where are you aiming to?

Composer, arranger, dj, producer... Sacha Di Manolo (Sacha Sieff in the real life) is not what people call a newbie. Borned in an artists family (his dad was a photographer, as his sister Sonia nowadays) he took an avid interest in music since his childhood. After practising the piano for a few years, he discovered, as he was growing up, hip hop and electronic music.
A side : Ride On. « this track is the easy going. I talk about records, dust, of what i like in old sounds, orchestrations… » New little prince of mash ups, Sacha plays with styles without complexes, as Mike Skinner or Just Jack do. B side : Side of your life. « i’m not a great instrumentist, so i found in words an easier way to express my emotions. I sing for personnal tracks, because, most of the time, i don’t have anybody to do it for me. » But listen to it only once and you will realise this young parisian has got a real storyteller’s talent. He gives us a lo fi balad simply rythmed by a few guitar chords, as a Bright Eyes made in France would do.

Take a few catchy pop hooks, infuse with a disco vibe, a smattering of synthetic/funk tempos and some sweeping, movie melodies, spice it up with a little club music to fill the dancefloor and you’ve got Data’s first out and out sound surfer album. This young French producer, just 23 years old, has mixed styles and influences to produce Skywriter - a modern, digital version of the golden age of groove, pop and dancefloor, lying somewhere between the disco revolution at the late Seventies and the resolutely FM style of the Eighties.

Pop power with a funk feel, a disco tempo and catchy synths, the new and fourth EP from Data is “lovin’ it large”. David Guillon (to use his real name) has drawn his inspiration for this album from Seventies groove fused with enchanting pop refrains, which he’s brought bang up to date with a powerful digital production. After the “Rapture EP”, this EP once again features the head tones of Canadian Sébastien Grainger, former singer and drummer with Death From Above 1979, closely resembling his debut album, which is set for release next May. On Skywriter, the French artist decided to reveal his true pop credentials, along similar lines to British singer-songwriter Calvin Harris, by creating a crossover of MTV glamour and disco-funk culture, to which the young producer has added a sweeping, melodic orchestration, recalling the heady sounds of Vangelis and Moroder. “For me,” says David, “ONE IN A MILLION would sit somewhere between Sister Sledge, Phœnix, and Outkast. The track has got a disco production vibe, thanks to the instrumental component, which reproduces each of the genre’s codes. On the other hand, Grainger has really perfected the track’s vocal aspect, with choruses, a refrain, a bridge, and different layers of vocal effects, which in some ways reflect a very American style and the opening up of certain black artists to rock and pop”.
Although this is true of the original version of the single, the club version, featured second on the EP, gives the track an electro-rock shock. You can experience this energetic sound live during the tour that Guillon is in the process of putting together, which includes appearances at numerous festivals this summer. For his part, Tomboy, the Scandinavian-based drummer, Whomadewho, and the team’s artist Gomma, have come up with a more restrained groove version, teetering on the edge of DFA’s white funk or certain new wave groups that grew out of the Eighties incubator. Lastly, the remix by Drixxxé is a brilliant exercise in style by the former producer of Triptik, a rap group whose instrumentals made a big impression on David when he discovered hip hop as a teenager. “With Drixxxé, we share the same passion for black music and stripped-down electronic funk. I admire his career as a producer and as someone who, at a certain period, was considered a little like the “French Neptunes”, thanks to his sensibility to pop and even rock culture. His remix is completely crazy, a direct tribute to classic Michael Jackson and represents pretty much what I imagined when I asked Drixxxé to remix this track.

A year and a half after the release of his first EP, he returns with a new one. True to his initial concept (all his tracks are defined by hours, which are, according to him, as evocative as feelings) and flavored by varied emotions, this new EP embodies the best of Danger’s productions – dynamism, surprising structures, sought textures – and displays a wider sound palette. His personal artwork is omnipresent throughout his work, just as his videos are interlocked to his productions. More than mere music, Danger, who was strongly influenced by videogames as a teenager, creates a full-fledged universe where these elements interact and complement each other.
He admits that the “Danger sound” has evolved : calmer and more melodic, less saturated and compressed. His EP opens on « 88:88 », an original atmospheric and epic waltz, « 07:46 », eyes a thriller soundtrack and is coupled with breaks and bleeps worthy of a descendant of Aphex Twin during the “Window Licker” era. Going back to his first love, the production of hip-hop tracks, he invites the American rapper Vyle for a gripping featuring. As for the remixes, they begin with a Danger self-remix, ideal for dancefloors and the blogosphere; the second one is signed EAT, a duo from Berlin close to Luciano and Villalobos, hosted by the label Diamond and Pearls; the last one comes from Japan, and was concocted by the buzzing Japanese trio 80kidz.

'Rapture' is an explosive encounter between two huge talents of the electro and rock scene: the Frenchie datA, at 22 years old one of the rising stars of the new pop/synthesizer generation (David prefers the term disco himself), and Sébastien Grainger, one-time singer of the now disbanded Death From Above 1979. The new youngsters have obviously mastered everything about beat and digital energy, but every one of them has a solid background in pop or, more often, funk and hip-hop that the techno and rave generation of the 1990s had left on one side. 'Besides my purely rap and black music past, I have limitless admiration for the great film music composers like Giorgio Moroder, Eric Demarsan, Vladimir Cosma, Vangelis and Sakamoto and at the same time for the major names in synthesiser pop. Otherwise, disco is really my thing. For me, disco is as much current things like Les Rythmes Digitales, Soulwax or Gossip as it is more mainstream, funky productions like Chic, Shalamar and Michael Jackson.'In a sense, like Daft Punk before them, this new French generation with its electro underground background refuses any hint of elitism and has its heart set on reconquering the world of mainstream pop. 'My dream,' says Daniel, his eyes shining 'is to end up producing for Usher. I’m not joking! Producing Usher or Timberlake, sharing a studio with Quincy Jones or even Timbaland, doing something completely wild.' Quite honestly, what worse could we wish him. Tracklisting: 01_ Rapture [03:40] 02_ Rapture (Pacific! remix) [04:17] 03_ Rapture (The Skywriters remix) [04:17]
Surprisingly, this new single, following on the heels of widely noticed Trop Laser and Aerius Light and announcing an ambitious album, Skywriter, bears no resemblance to the clash of electro and rock’n’roll we might have expected. According to David, 'instead the idea was to get Sébastien to work on a theme a bit like 'Maniac' from Flashdance, to conjure up images of Miami and the 80s, and above all to really write and compose a song and not just make do with a vintage treatment and atmosphere…'. A rhythmic style that indeed brings to mind the now-forgotten Michael Sembello (who sang the Flashdance hit), the grand synthesizers, the high voice, the happy ending guitar solo; everything here on the EP reminds us of a certain 80s golden age of synthesizer-based FM disco-pop that a whole new generation of young French artists seems to be now rediscovering and reappropriating.

Aged 23, Frank Rivoire aka Danger is a free lance graphic designer in his every day life. He’s been in contact with the label only 3 weeks after putting his tracks on the myspace of his new project. Having produced music for various techno/8bit/electro punk bands for over almost a decade, Frank now targets the world.
Now that you know this, forget about it. This is just the past. Danger only belongs to the future and exists with it. His music reflects the most extreme feelings you can experience in your existence : extasy, fear, sublime, agony. It’s a matter of life and death, and victory, but in any case a matter of defeat.
You are now warned. First EP, Danger, 09/14/2007.

Ekler’o’shock presents The Unexpektheadz 2, A space conquest soundtrack. Review on XLR8R.com: "Ekler'o'shock's tenth release Unexpektheadz 2 is a collection of cosmically-alligned French electro bangers. And the first offering from all-girl protégés Terry Poison is a hyper-active pop-ascent into the new French sound. '24 Hours' may be that pre-peak track that gets swanky warehouses and clubs locked, loaded, and ready for departure." A SPACE CONQUEST SOUNDTRACK:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Tracklisting:
A V.A compilation with 18 tracks including rare gems and exclusives, available in digipack CD now in our shop sectioon and in february 2007 in all the good record stores. The artwork is powered by french rising graphic designer Fake, who's been collaborating with Sixpack, Clark magazine or MTV.
Whether it be Moroder's cosmic disco, Sun-Ra's freaky experiences, lo-fi illusionism from french movie pioneer Georges Méliès, or more recently Daft Punk's Interstellar motion, Space has always been a recurrent source of inspiration for artists. You already knew that? We didn't doubt you did.
The Unexpektheadz 2 brings in the same spaceship Early electronics reminiscences, sleazy electro funk, cosmic techno, digital rap made in USA, freaky retrofuturistic 8bit and sophisticated electronics. Forget gravity, welcome on board.

The most anticipated rookie from the New paris electronic scene has just delivered his 4 tracks EP, somewhere between Daft Punk, Justice and Mr Oizo. Electro-funk, hard synth dance, whatever you call it, it'll always turn your dancefloor upside-down. The first track J'aime pas l'Art features Supermicro Grems (Deep Hop) screaming in an art performance in Parisian Centre Georges Pompidou.
in Paris right now, it seems the kids can't get enough of dancing to the synthesizer music, the harder and darker the better. There is even a scene of a sort, that includes Justice, Digitalism, Mr Oizo, Feadz or TTC. If you haven't heard this stuff, essentially the sound is all about square-wave mono-synths - actually it is the kind of sound that, if you have one of those sound-system test CDs, would say "warning, the following sound can damage your speakers" before it, because the transients (the attack vs fall-off) are wicked sharp, regular, and fast - it is used as a stress test for speakers. Basically what this means is that it buzzes, but in a nasty way that makes your stomach feel funny, and for a lot of people (myself included) makes your feet want to move.
So, new to the scene is this young man (just 20!): DJ and producer datA from the outskirts of Paris, who says he likes "Michael Jackson, Jean-Michel Jarre, Daft Punk, Chroméo, Jamie Lidell, Pharrell Williams" - sounds like a reasonable swath of pop goodness. He has DJed at hot spots Triptyque and Nouveau Casino, and has been playing in Berlin with Léonard de Léonard, and Chris de Luca (one half of Funkstörung), and then back in Paris in May, with Tacteel and SebastiAn.

Grimericana! Dj Raedawn aka Crunc Tesla is back!! A very very long time ago, there used to be this emerging form of youth music that energized a generation. Crunc Tesla’s Welcome to the circus EP propels us back to this point of origin without clinging onto nostolgia. The music, produced by Atlanta-bred Brooklyn transplant Dj Raedawn, is a reunification of today’s fractured rap-techno pedigree. Simply put, it is a 25 minute kinetic energy burst somewhere along the order of Outkast, Squarepusher, The Pharcyde, Harry Bellafonte and Timbaland. Acid basslines, gypsy organs, tweaked synths and samples melt onto grimey beats with creamy rapid-fire lyrics that flicker from dark to brilliant. The bipolar fusion of tones melds remnants of middle eastern melodies with dirty south drum kits, dancehall riddims, intensive broken beat glitchy editing with even a twist of Baroque and Santeria. Tracklisting: 01- Welcome to the circus [5:25] 02- Welcome to the circus(dDamage remix) [5:20] 03- Who's the leader of the club [4:40] 04- Just a dream [4:33] 05- Like is this ghetto? [3:15]
These 5 tracks are all taken from the forthcoming Crunc Tesla LP due on Ekler'o'shock fall 2006. Some journalists might call this record American Grime or Crunk-Tech or something, but whatever, this is something you gotta hear now!

What would happen if Outkast rocked a rave with Shy FX? or if Bone Thugs N Harmony and Nobukazu Takemura enjoyed a late brunch while recording on a laptop? ....or better yet ...if Aphex Twin and Missy Elliot dropped a sheet of acid, tied the knot and gave birth to triplets..... Can you imagine this world? Would you like to visit it?
80 Minutes of Stank Stank propels you through the entire gamut of Hip Hop's possibilities. Raedawn takes glitch-hop, commercial hip-hop, trip-hop, hip-house, dirty south, underground, indie, gangsta, grime, and even bootyshake and seems to effortlessly strip these sub-genres of their perceived divisions. Whereas Mix CD's have traditionally been a stringing together of songs by tempo, mood or genre, 80 minutes of Stank Stank is a Manifesto; a unification of a fractured rap pedigree. This decree is reinforced by the cd's infusion with a shit load of hybrids ranging from Dead Prez's revolution vs. Plaid's involution to Anti-pop vs. the Mega-pop of Jay-z. This is a compilation of contrast-the Macro and Micro- Gangster and Thinker- Techno and Nature- Consonance and Dissonance. Mixing is just that-> the actuality of change. Raedawn seamlessly blurs the line between mixing-remixing-cutting-scratching-pasting-looping-processing and tweaking songs while always bringing the listener back to the manifested point of origin. The true ingenuity of the mix lies in this embrace of the paradox.
In the late 70's, Afrika Bambaataa named this dichotomy, originally calling what we now know as hip-hop::>> muthafuckin "Punk Rock Disco"!!. Thus, 80 Minutes of Stank Stank is a nexus of sorts to the rapidly mutating styles of rap that your kids probably won't even recognize!

From mutant pixel electronic to anti R’n’B fully loaded with infra-bass, from 80’s pop reminiscences and mainstream House sweat to breakbeat cascades and cheap keyboard gimmicks , it’s useless to ask Xerak to describe his music.
His first official release after his Mix-steaks serie, the 12" single Sexfloor Shakers is the epic start of Xerak adventures on the Sexfloor, a place where virgin muses, pixel monsters stuffed with hormones and vicious boss from the entertainment biz meet.
From the proto hip electro Sexfloor Shakers to the booty robotic Everybody wanna suck everybody, through the aphrodisiac People want my sex or the electro freak rock Hyper Rock for Jerry featuring the mysterious Albertine Symphony, Xerak here sets up the foundations for his upcoming animated movie-album.

APSCI (pronounce App Sigh), as in Applied Science, is the cross-continental adventure of the hauntingly operatic vocals of Sydneyite Dana Diaz Tutaan and the unquestionable skills of rapper/producer Ra LaMotta, fused with def Jux resident dj Big Wiz’ experience of the decks. Apsci is now signed to Quannum Projects, home of Dj Shadow and Blackalicious. Tirade Highway is Apsci’s first single on vinyl. This groundbreaking 12” was released in march 2004, thus six months after we met in Paris for their first gig that we organised, with headliner and friend Mike Ladd. This record is a blast into a world of mutant electro and innovative hip hop which break down the boundaries between laptop leftfield electronics and hip hop credibility. Nowadays Apsci have just released their first US official album, Thanks for Asking, on Quannum Projects. Tracklisting: 01- Tirade Highway [2:44] 02- Tirade Highway instrumental [2:44] 03- Synth 3Po [3:10] 04- Synth 4Po feat. Seraphim, Tes & Mike Ladd [4:06]

A down and midtempo E.P with electro-jazzy mood, the record includes four atmospheric tracks that seduce the ears and involves the auditor awarness in an backward stream opposed to so many today's production still stuck in an obsolete french-touch style. With samples from the cult french motion program Les Shadoks with the voice of Claude Piéplu on the main theme dub version, the artist revisits its first anthem, the beautiful and well named L’échappée. The sound from "deBug tentative" is straight-forward, multiple and singular with its dub, The sound from "deBug tentative" is straight-forward, multiple and singular with its dub, breakbeat and electronica backgrounds.
